Inbetweeners Clip - Disability In The Media

Why is the clip funny?
Viewers may find the clip off the disabled person in a wheel chair being hit by a Frisbee funny because of her misfortune of being hit but others may find it funny because it’s a disabled person being hit by a Frisbee. They may also find it funny as she cries which displays a weakness.

How is the disabled girl being represented?
The disabled lady is represented as childlike and very weak compared to the average person. When she is hit by the Frisbee she beings to cry. An adult wouldn't normally cry as it didn't hit her very hard but a child would which shows she is very childlike. She has carer with her which shows she is unable to complete everyday activities by herself.

Are we meant to laugh at the disabled person?
In society we aren't supposed to laugh at disabled people as it is wrong but people still do. This could just be because they are laughing at her misfortune or the fact that will hit her from such a distance. I do think that the majority will just laugh as it is a disabled person who is less able to prevent something like that occurring.

Are they the 'butt' of the joke?
I think they she is the main thing that people are laughing at within the clip but I also think that they may laugh at Will as he gets chased by a large group of boys when they see him pulling the Frisbee out of her hand.

How do you think disabled people respond to this?
People that are mentally disabled may not that people see them as a joke and laugh at them so they may not realise but people who are physically disabled will be able to see and they may find this highly offensive.

Are we as a society cultivated to think we should pity the disabled?

As a society we are often expected to pity the disabled as they are seen as less able than others but I think some disabled people may find this offensive points out the fact they are less able which they may not like.

  1. It would have been more conscionable if you'd have considered a variety of interpretations of why the clip is funny; it isn't (stereotypically) just because the disabled girl gets hurt, for example. You should also ensure you're applying the theories learnt in lesson to give your writing more sophistication and maturity.
